Niger Abduction: Police Confirm Over 20 Taken, Local Officials Say 47

Authorities say residents were abducted from a farming community in Mariga LGA, Niger State, on September 27, 2026. Police confirm more than 20 victims, while local officials put the figure at 47.

Police Confirm More Than 20 Abducted in Niger Farming Community as Local Officials Put Count at 47

More than 20 people were abducted in a farming community in Niger State, police have confirmed, while local authorities put the number taken significantly higher at 47.

The attack occurred at about 3 p.m. on September 27 around Mukura village in the Kasuwan-Garba District of Mariga Local Government Area, according to Niger State Police Command spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun.

Police said suspected bandits abducted “over twenty persons” and that joint security rescue efforts were ongoing.

But the scale of the abduction remains disputed.

Mariga Local Government Chairman Aliyu Bagga Muhamadu said 47 farmers were taken while working on groundnut farms in the area. He said most were women, with some men also among those abducted.

IDNN is therefore not treating 47 as a reconciled official count.

The strongest confirmed police position remains that more than 20 people were abducted.

Farmers taken while working

Local authorities said the victims were working on groundnut farms when they were abducted.

That gives the incident a consequence beyond the immediate security crisis.

For farming communities, attacks on people working their land can disrupt harvesting, deter residents from returning to farms and deepen pressure on households that depend on agriculture for food and income.

IDNN has not established a measured economic loss from this incident and is not assigning one.

Police and local authorities give different figures

The difference between the police count and the figure provided by local authorities is material.

Police said the command received a report on September 28 that more than 20 people had been abducted the previous day.

The Mariga council chairman, however, said 47 people were taken.

Until the figures are reconciled, the exact number of people in captivity remains unresolved.

The council chairman also said kidnappers had demanded ₦2 million per victim and that one abducted woman had given birth while in captivity. Those claims have not been independently established by IDNN and remain attributed to him.

A security crisis with a farming consequence

The Mariga abduction raises a wider accountability question: how safely can residents continue working their farms in communities exposed to repeated armed attacks and abductions?

For rural communities dependent on agriculture, insecurity can extend beyond the immediate victims. It can affect access to farmland, harvesting activity and household livelihoods.

The immediate priority remains accounting for those taken and securing their release.

The longer-term test is whether security authorities can make farming areas safe enough for residents to work without facing the same threat again.

Rescue efforts ongoing

Police said joint security rescue efforts were ongoing.

IDNN is withholding tactical search locations, deployment movements and other operational details because publication could create avoidable public-safety risks.

As of the latest information checked, authorities had not announced the rescue of all those abducted or issued a reconciled final victim count.

For now, two facts define the story: more than 20 people were abducted according to police, while local officials say 47 were taken.

Until that gap is resolved and the victims are accounted for, the Mariga abduction remains an active security and citizen-consequence file.
