The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has vehemently refuted reports circulating on social media, claiming that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle made several fresh demands for his contract renewal. The rumored demands include a significant salary increase and other extravagant perks.
According to the reports, which quickly went viral, Chelle, currently earning $50,000 per month, allegedly requested a monthly salary of $130,000. The report also claimed that Chelle demanded a host of privileges, including:
- Contracts for his technical staff
- A private SUV with a chauffeur and security detail
- A secure residence with 24-hour power supply
- A fully furnished office equipped with a projector and internet access for analysis
- Business class flight tickets for himself and his wife, with economy class for his two children
- GPS provision and appropriate coaching equipment
- Greater autonomy in selecting players, international friendly matches, and youth development initiatives
Additionally, Chelle reportedly asked for the ability to travel abroad to scout national team players, attend local league matches to identify potential talent for U-23, U-20, and U-17 squads, and oversee other team-related matters.
NFF Refutes the Claims
When approached for comment on these reports, the NFF’s Director of Communication, Ademola Olajire, categorically denied the allegations, stating, “Sincerely, I am not aware.” This response has added to the confusion and speculation surrounding the future of the Super Eagles’ head coach.
Despite the ongoing speculation, the NFF maintains that these claims are unfounded and not in line with the official contract discussions with Eric Chelle.
Chelle’s Contract Situation
While the details of Chelle’s current contract remain confidential, it’s clear that the coach’s success with the Super Eagles is fueling discussions about his future and remuneration. Chelle has overseen impressive results for the team, which has increased his leverage in negotiations.
However, the NFF’s rejection of the reported demands signals that there may be limitations to what the federation is willing to accommodate in contract negotiations. The NFF continues to focus on maintaining financial discipline while striving for the best possible outcome for the Super Eagles.
Looking Ahead
As of now, Chelle’s tenure remains secure, but the uncertainty over his contract might still be a potential issue moving forward. Nigeria’s national team performance under Chelle’s leadership will be key in shaping future contract talks and securing stability for the team.
It remains to be seen whether Chelle’s contract situation will evolve into a more formal negotiation or if the coach will proceed without a resolution to his current demands.
