₦50,000 NERSI relief: how selection works and why payments come in phases
Government says beneficiaries need not apply or pay an agent. Selection and notification batches determine who receives support in each phase.
The Federal Government says notifications and payments under its ₦50,000 National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention are being handled in phases, meaning selected beneficiaries may be contacted at different times.
TheCable reported on November 5 that the programme supports a limited number of households at a time. Not receiving an SMS may reflect the timing of notification batches or non-selection for the current phase. The guidance does not guarantee that someone who is not selected now will be included later.
NERSI was announced on October 30 by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, as support for vulnerable Nigerians facing rising living costs. His statement described a monthly benefit of ₦50,000, subject to periodic review.
How beneficiaries are selected
The programme’s official guidance says selection draws on the National Social Register and verified national identity records, with screening intended to identify poor and vulnerable households.
Being recorded in those databases does not guarantee selection. Holding a payment-provider account or possessing a National Identification Number does not, on its own, establish eligibility for payment.
The minister’s announcement says beneficiaries do not need to submit an application, pay a fee or register through an agent.
What government has said about monthly payments
Doro’s October 30 statement explicitly described the assistance as monthly and said beneficiaries would be notified before changes to the intervention.
FIJ reported on November 5 that the ministry had removed an earlier “one-off” description from the programme webpage after its reporting highlighted the discrepancy with the minister’s announcement. IDNN has not independently verified the webpage’s revision history.
The minister’s announcement establishes the government’s stated monthly commitment. However, the guidance reviewed does not specify recurring payment dates or how long support will continue. IDNN has not independently verified successive monthly payments to beneficiaries.
Use official channels and protect your details
The ministry says selected beneficiaries will be contacted through licensed payment providers and asked for consent before funds are transferred. Its announcement directs readers to the official programme website for updates.
The official guidance warns beneficiaries not to pay anyone claiming to release their support or disclose their PIN, OTP or BVN. It also says nobody can sell a place on the beneficiary list.
Readers should verify any notification through their provider’s official channels before acting. A forwarded message or an agent’s promise is not proof of selection.
