NDLEA rearrests 83-year-old Abia woman over fresh drug allegations

NDLEA says the 83-year-old woman was rearrested in Obingwa, Abia State, over fresh drug allegations.

NDLEA rearrests 83-year-old woman in Abia over fresh drug allegations after 2025 conviction

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has rearrested an 83-year-old woman in Abia State over fresh drug allegations, months after the agency said she was convicted in an earlier narcotics case.

NDLEA identified the woman as Uloma Uchechi Sunday and said its operatives arrested her on October 7 at her home in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area.

The agency alleged that methamphetamine and a strain of cannabis commonly called “Colorado” were found concealed around her waist during the operation.

Those claims relate to a new case and have not been established by a court.

Earlier conviction

NDLEA said Sunday had previously been arrested alongside her daughter in May 2025.

According to the agency, both women later pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or a ₦200,000 fine each.

The agency said they paid the fines and were subsequently released.

That earlier conviction is legally distinct from the allegations arising from Sunday’s latest arrest.

A previous conviction does not establish guilt in a new case.

Fresh allegations, no disclosed charge yet

NDLEA also alleged that the 83-year-old operated a drug joint frequented by criminal elements.

IDNN has not independently established that claim, and it remains an allegation by NDLEA.

As of the latest material reviewed, NDLEA had not disclosed a fresh charge sheet or court filing arising from the October 7 arrest.

That means the current legal position is an arrest accompanied by agency allegations — not a fresh conviction.

The agency’s account also did not provide exact weights for the substances it said were recovered from Sunday, so no quantity is being attributed to her case beyond what has been publicly established.

The legal line matters

The unusual age of the suspect and her previous conviction make the case notable, but they do not lower the evidential threshold for reporting the new allegations.

The next legal test is whether NDLEA files charges, what offences are alleged in court and how Sunday responds to them.

Until then, the distinction remains clear: she has a previous conviction, but the allegations behind her latest arrest are still unproven.
