NDLEA Arraigns Two Over Alleged Enugu Meth Lab; Trial Set for October 21
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arraigned two men over an alleged clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and Chukwu Georginus Monday, also known as George, face five charges at the Federal High Court in Enugu.
The charges include alleged conspiracy, organising, managing and financing a drug-trafficking organisation, and unlawful possession of precursor chemicals.
The Guardian reported that both men pleaded not guilty.
Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello fixed October 21, 2026, for trial after the NDLEA sought an accelerated hearing.
The charges remain allegations. Neither defendant has been convicted.
NDLEA alleges transnational drug network
NDLEA alleges the defendants were involved in operating a clandestine laboratory at Eziama community in Obeagu, Awgu LGA.
The agency says the operation also involved Rodriguez Villanueva, a Mexican national it alleges was linked to a drug cartel in Mexico.
Those claims form part of the prosecution case and have not been established by the court.
NDLEA said its Special Operations Unit tracked Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states during surveillance in December 2025.
The agency says the operation eventually led investigators to the Obeagu compound.
It alleges the facility contained improvised reactors and distillation equipment capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
Agency reports large chemical seizures
NDLEA says searches linked to the investigation uncovered large quantities of chemicals and laboratory equipment.
Among the materials listed by the agency were 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 690 litres of methylamine, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid and 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide.
The agency also reported recovering other chemicals and processing equipment.
At Monday’s family residence, NDLEA says officers recovered eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilograms of ephedrine.
These are prosecution evidence claims.
IDNN has not independently tested the substances or established ownership of the recovered materials.
Three others named in case remain at large
NDLEA says three other people named in the charge remain at large.
They are Uchenna, also known as Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Rodriguez Villanueva.
Their alleged roles have not been established by a court.
The October 21 trial is expected to test the prosecution’s claims about the alleged laboratory, the recovered materials and the claimed links between the defendants and the Mexican national named by NDLEA.
Until the court determines the case, the defendants remain accused persons entitled to the presumption of innocence.
