NAFDAC Investigates NYSC Member’s Death at Enugu Camp

NAFDAC is investigating the medicines administered to NYSC member Etimbuk Daniel before his death at the Awgu orientation camp.

NAFDAC Probes NYSC Member’s Death at Enugu Camp as Drug-Cause Claim Remains Unproven

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control is investigating the death of NYSC member Etimbuk Daniel at the Awgu Orientation Camp in Enugu State.

The investigation followed claims that substandard or falsified medicines may have contributed to his death.

NAFDAC says that has not been established.

What Happened

According to NAFDAC, Daniel first reported to the camp clinic on October 7 with symptoms suggestive of severe malaria and a history of peptic ulcer disease.

He was treated, stabilised and discharged the following morning with oral medication.

Daniel returned to the clinic on October 10 complaining of pain in his right thigh.

Medical staff reportedly found that he was sweating heavily, had critically low blood pressure and was producing little urine.

He received intravenous fluids, but his condition deteriorated and he was referred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku-Ozalla.

He later became comatose and resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Drug-Cause Claim Still Unproven

NAFDAC said the treating doctors believed Daniel died from acute kidney injury secondary to severe dehydration and shock.

That remains a clinical view from the treating team. It is not a final autopsy, toxicology or regulatory finding.

NAFDAC said its officers visited the camp clinic, interviewed medical personnel and collected samples of the medicines administered to Daniel for laboratory analysis.

No laboratory finding reviewed by IDNN has established that any of those medicines was substandard, falsified or responsible for his death.

Questions Go Beyond the Medicines

The case has also triggered wider scrutiny of healthcare at NYSC orientation camps.

The Senate ordered an investigation into Daniel’s death and the state of medical facilities and emergency-response systems in camps nationwide.

That raises broader questions about the standard of care, referral systems and emergency capacity available when a corps member becomes critically ill.

Those questions remain under investigation. They should not be presented as proven negligence or institutional failure.

What Is Established

Daniel died after receiving treatment at the Awgu orientation camp and later being referred to hospital.

NAFDAC is investigating the medicines administered to him and has collected samples for laboratory analysis.

What has not been established is that any medicine caused his death.

The next major evidentiary step is the outcome of the laboratory and regulatory investigation.
