Mexico End Knockout Drought As Azteca Roars In Ecuador Win

Mexico reached the World Cup last 16 after beating Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca

Mexico are back in the World Cup last 16 after turning the Azteca into a cauldron and beating Ecuador 2-0 in a powerful Round of 32 statement.

First-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez sent El Tri through, ending a 40-year World Cup knockout-stage wait and giving the host nation its biggest tournament night at home since 1986.

The match was delayed by a storm, but the wait only sharpened the noise inside the stadium. When Mexico finally started, they played with the urgency of a team determined to make history answer back.

Ecuador never truly recovered from the opening pressure.

Mexico Strike Early

Mexico flew into the game with speed, aggression and belief.

Gilberto Mora threatened twice, Raúl Jiménez headed wide, and Javier Aguirre’s side repeatedly pushed Ecuador back in a relentless first-half performance. Ecuador briefly escaped when John Yeboah struck the near post, but most of the early force came from Mexico.

The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute.

Quiñones ran in behind down the left channel, cut inside and fired a fierce finish at the near post for his third goal of the tournament. The Azteca erupted, and Mexico had the lead their start deserved.

Nine minutes later, the noise rose again.

Jiménez won the ball high, exchanged passes with Quiñones and finished with a sliced strike that bent away from Hernán Galíndez. It was a veteran’s goal built from pressure, timing and instinct.

Mexico had not just taken control.

Ecuador Find No Way Back

Ecuador changed shape and personnel after half-time, with Sebastian Beccacece trying to force a response.

But Mexico did not give them the rhythm they needed. Aguirre’s side became more conservative, protected the lead and still carried danger when set pieces arrived.

César Montes forced Galíndez into a strong save with a powerful header, before Johan Vásquez nodded wide from the following corner. Ecuador had more of the ball in phases, but they could not turn possession into belief.

Their night worsened late when Hincapié was sent off, completing a miserable ending for La Tri. The Los Angeles Times also recorded the red card as part of Ecuador’s collapse in Mexico City.

By then, the match had already moved away from them.

Mexico were managing the clock, the crowd were roaring every clearance, and the last-16 door was open.

Azteca Becomes A Fortress Again

For Mexico, this was not just a win. It was a World Cup memory restored.

El Tri extended their unbeaten 2026 World Cup run at the venue to 10 matches and claimed a fourth consecutive clean sheet at the tournament. Current reports also frame the victory as Mexico’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986, when the country last hosted the tournament and beat Bulgaria in the last 16.

That history made the night heavier.

Mexico have carried decades of knockout frustration. Good teams have reached this point before. Hope has risen before. Then the fifth game has disappeared.

This time, at home, they broke the pattern.

England Or DR Congo Await

Mexico’s reward is a last-16 tie against either England or DR Congo.

That will bring a different kind of test. England would bring pedigree, pressure and elite attackers. DR Congo would bring physicality, belief and the danger of another upset.

But Mexico have earned the right to look ahead.

They defended with authority. They attacked with purpose. They rode the storm, then created one of their own.

For one night, the Azteca did what Mexico needed it to do.

It became home, pressure, noise and history.

And El Tri finally turned that into a knockout win.
