Manchester City cruised to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, securing a 5-1 aggregate win. The victory sends City to the EFL Cup final, where they will face Arsenal next month. The match saw Omar Marmoush score twice in the first half, with Tijjani Reijnders adding a third. Anthony Elanga’s second-half strike for Newcastle proved to be little more than a consolation.
Marmoush Scores Twice as City Dominate
City took control of the tie early, with Marmoush scoring an unorthodox brace within the first 29 minutes. The first came in the seventh minute, as Dan Burn’s challenge deflected the ball off Marmoush and over Aaron Ramsdale. Marmoush doubled the lead near the half-hour mark, nodding in after Kieran Trippier’s clearance misjudged a cross into the box.
Reijnders Caps Off City’s Counter-Attack
Three minutes later, City added a third goal. Reijnders finished a counter-attack he started himself, driving through Newcastle’s half before slamming the ball into the net. With a 3-0 lead and Newcastle struggling to break City’s defense, the result was effectively sealed before the halftime break.
Second Half Substitutes Fail to Spark Newcastle
At the start of the second half, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made several changes, bringing on Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga in an attempt to turn the tide. While Wissa missed two clear chances, Elanga fired a brilliant solo effort past James Trafford to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
Despite their best efforts, Newcastle couldn’t find another goal, and City’s defense held firm. Marmoush missed a chance for a hat-trick late in the game, while Erling Haaland, stepping off the bench, saw a superb save from Ramsdale deny him a goal.
City Set for EFL Cup Final Against Arsenal
With this win, Manchester City secured their 10th EFL Cup final appearance, becoming only the fourth club to reach double digits in the competition’s history. They will now face Arsenal in what promises to be a thrilling final next month. City are looking to add yet another trophy to their cabinet under Pep Guardiola, who has already guided the team to numerous domestic titles.
