Laporta Wins Barcelona Presidential Election

Joan Laporta has been re-elected as president of FC Barcelona, defeating challenger Victor Font in the club’s latest election.

The charismatic 63-year-old lawyer secured a decisive victory and will lead the Catalan club until 2031.

Laporta, who also defeated Font in the 2021 presidential election, stepped down from his position weeks ago to comply with the electoral process. He will officially resume office in July.

Strong Support From Club Members

Approximately 42 percent of Barcelona members participated in the vote, representing 48,480 ballots.

With 36,117 votes counted, Laporta secured 68.47 percent, while Font received 29.52 percent. The remaining votes were not enough to change the outcome, making Laporta’s victory mathematically certain.

Font acknowledged defeat after the result became clear.

“We’re sad, we were really hopeful, and it’s a pity — we congratulate Laporta,” he told reporters.

Players and Club Figures Took Part in Voting

Several first-team players and head coach Hansi Flick participated in the voting after Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Sevilla earlier in the day.

Laporta also visited the voting stations, which were set up at Camp Nou and in other Catalan cities including Girona, Tarragona and Lleida, as well as in Andorra.

Among other notable members casting votes were former Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets, Ballon d’Or Femeni winner Aitana Bonmati, and former player and coach Xavi Hernandez.

Laporta’s Leadership and Financial Decisions

Laporta first served as Barcelona president between 2003 and 2010, a period widely regarded as one of the club’s most successful eras.

During that time, Barcelona won the Champions League in 2006 and 2009, including the famous 2009 treble under Pep Guardiola.

When Laporta returned to office in 2021, the club was facing a severe financial crisis. His administration introduced controversial financial measures, including selling portions of future television rights and club assets to generate funds.

Those resources helped Barcelona sign players such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha in 2022.

Sporting Success and Future Plans

Despite criticism over some financial strategies and Barcelona’s initial involvement in the European Super League project, Laporta’s tenure has also seen success on the pitch.

Barcelona won La Liga titles in 2023 and 2025 and reached the Champions League semi-finals last season, their first appearance at that stage since 2019.

Laporta’s new term will see him continue leading the club through financial recovery and sporting development as Barcelona looks to strengthen its position in European football.
