Four critically injured as container truck crashes into vehicles at Lagos Mile 2
Four people were critically injured after a container-laden Mack truck crashed into multiple vehicles and commercial motorcycles at First Gate, inward Mile 2, Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said the crash involved a Mack truck carrying a fully loaded 40-foot container, another truck carrying a 20-foot container, a T4 commercial bus and nine commercial motorcycles.
LASTMA said the injured victims — three men and one woman — sustained serious injuries and were taken for urgent medical treatment.
No death was reported in the incident.
LASTMA points to apparent brake failure
According to LASTMA, preliminary findings indicated that the Mack truck may have suffered an apparent brake failure before the driver lost control and collided with other road users.
That remains the agency’s preliminary assessment, not a final mechanical finding.
The cause of the crash therefore remains under investigation.
Drivers handed over to police
LASTMA said its operatives responded to the scene, assisted the injured victims and managed traffic around the crash site.
The drivers involved were handed over to police for investigation and possible further action depending on the outcome of the inquiry.
Damaged vehicles and other obstructions were also removed to restore traffic movement along the corridor.
Heavy-vehicle safety under scrutiny
The crash again raises questions about the mechanical condition and operation of heavy-duty vehicles on Lagos roads.
LASTMA urged operators of articulated vehicles to ensure that braking systems, tyres, steering mechanisms and other safety-critical components are checked before vehicles enter public roads.
The agency also raised concerns about commercial motorcycles operating around restricted highways and heavy vehicles.
For commuters using the Mile 2 corridor, the immediate consequence was a serious crash involving multiple road users and disruption on one of Lagos’s busiest transport routes.
The investigation must now establish whether mechanical failure, driver conduct, vehicle maintenance or another factor caused the collision — and whether any regulatory breach contributed.
