Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency officials are working to ease congestion around the Sinowa/El-Dorado–Ibafo axis, while motorists have been warned against driving against traffic and indiscriminate lane changes.
Severe congestion affected sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, August 25, as motorists faced lengthy delays and traffic officials worked to restore normal movement.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE, said congestion was affecting both the inbound and outbound carriageways around the Sinowa/El-Dorado–Ibafo axis following an obstruction linked to a crash on the outbound section the previous day.
Lane indiscipline worsens congestion
TRACE said attempts by some motorists to leave their lanes and cross into the opposite carriageway were worsening the situation and complicating traffic-management operations.
The agency said traffic was building towards Lagos on the inbound carriageway, while motorists travelling towards Ibadan were also experiencing significant delays.
Personnel from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were deployed to manage the situation and work towards restoring normal traffic flow.
Motorists were urged to remain patient, maintain lane discipline and avoid driving against traffic.
Commuters face extended delays
The disruption has imposed longer travel times on commuters using one of Nigeria’s busiest road corridors, with heavy traffic affecting private vehicles, commercial transport and articulated trucks.
Drivers approaching the affected corridor were advised to allow additional travel time.
TRACE also listed the Old Lagos–Sango–Ifo–Ewekoro–Abeokuta Expressway, Sagamu–Sotubo–Ogijo–Ikorodu Expressway and Ijebu-Ode–Epe Expressway as alternatives where practical.
Those routes should not, however, be treated as guarantees of faster travel, as displaced traffic may also increase pressure on surrounding roads.
Tuesday crash claim remains unconfirmed
Some secondary reports attributed the congestion to a trailer said to have overturned at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
That chronology does not align cleanly with TRACE’s official advisory, which links the obstruction to the previous day’s crash.
IDNN is therefore not treating a separate 1 a.m. Tuesday trailer crash as established fact.
Clearance not yet confirmed
As of the latest authoritative traffic advisory reviewed by IDNN, officials were working to normalise traffic.
Full clearance of the obstruction and unrestricted traffic movement had not been confirmed.
For commuters, deployment of traffic officials is not the same as clearance. The next significant development will be authoritative confirmation that normal traffic flow has been restored across the affected corridor.
