Idimu residents decry delayed Ogunrombi road project, allege access payments
Residents and businesses along Ogunrombi Street in Idimu are complaining about a road project that has exceeded its stated 12-month timeline, while several residents separately allege that workers demanded payments for access through parts of the construction zone.
The project, running towards Orisunmbare, is under the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
Site reporting found construction still ongoing despite the stated delivery period.
Residents said work began in July 2025 and has remained incomplete beyond that timeline.
Residents report restricted access
People living and working along the affected route said movement through parts of the construction area had become difficult.
Several residents separately alleged that workers demanded money before allowing some vehicles through.
A commercial motorcycle rider alleged that operators were asked to pay ₦10,000 weekly.
A business manager separately alleged that payments of ₦3,000 were sometimes demanded for access.
Those claims remain allegations.
IDNN has not independently established that construction workers collected unauthorised payments.
Businesses cite disruption and losses
Businesses along the road also reported operational problems linked to the construction.
One manager said trucks could no longer enter the company premises after access points were removed during the works.
He also said vehicles left outside had been vandalised.
Residents further complained about the quality of some newly constructed drive-ins.
Those quality claims have not been independently tested by IDNN and should not be treated as established construction defects.
Delay becomes the central accountability issue
The clearest verified accountability question is the project timeline.
If the road carried a 12-month delivery period, residents need an explanation for why work remained unfinished beyond that point.
They also need a revised completion schedule and clarity on what stage the project has reached.
Other questions include whether contract extensions were approved, what caused the delay and how access through the construction zone is meant to be managed.
Payment allegations require answers
The alleged access payments raise a separate accountability issue.
The Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the contractor need to clarify whether workers are authorised to collect any form of payment from motorists, residents or businesses for access through the site.
At the originating report’s deadline, Ministry spokesperson Adeshina Odunuga had not answered calls or replied to a text message seeking comment.
No later ministry response has been established in the current desk record.
A direct contractor response also remains outstanding.
Residents await completion plan
For residents and businesses, the immediate issue is practical: when will the road be completed, how will access be managed until then and what will authorities do about the payment allegations?
The next accountability test is whether the ministry and contractor provide a clear revised timeline, explain the delay and address the complaints raised by people using the road.
