Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended his decision to start young goalkeeper James Trafford in their 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, despite a mistake that led directly to Spurs’ second goal.
Trafford, 22, returned to City this summer in a £31m move from Burnley. Starting ahead of first-choice keeper Ederson, he misplaced a pass under pressure that eventually allowed João Palhinha to score Spurs’ second at the Etihad Stadium.
Guardiola, however, refused to criticise the youngster, insisting he had earned his spot after performing well in City’s 4-0 win over Wolves the previous week.
“He made a good first game and I decided to continue,” Guardiola said. “When I take decisions in the first part of the season, it is about giving players opportunities. Today, we missed the simple things – that is why we lost.”
Spurs clinical, City disjointed
Brennan Johnson opened the scoring for Tottenham before Palhinha capitalised on Trafford’s error just before half-time. While City created several chances, their play lacked rhythm and precision.
Guardiola admitted his team must improve, adding: “The effort and running were extraordinary. But we need to improve step by step until it clicks. It is only the second game of the season.”
Ederson’s uncertain future
Ederson, relegated to the bench, is reportedly considering his future at Manchester City. Though Guardiola denied the decision was tied to transfer speculation, the Brazilian’s absence raised questions about long-term plans at the club.
Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank praised Palhinha, who is on loan from Bayern Munich. Frank said the midfielder’s confidence was growing despite not being fully fit.
“Palhinha – wow. Sometimes players just need confidence. He was excellent today,” Frank remarked.
Spurs are yet to concede in the league this season after a 3-0 win against Burnley the previous weekend. Frank added: “The clean sheet makes me very happy. It is a big thing we have been working on.”
Transfer watch
City defender Manuel Akanji, left out of the squad for tactical reasons, has attracted transfer interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, with a minimum £15m fee being discussed.
The defeat leaves Manchester City looking to regroup ahead of their clash with Brighton next weekend, while Spurs continue their promising start under Frank.
