FIFA Opens Ethics Case In Congo Football
FIFA’s Ethics Committee has launched disciplinary proceedings against three senior officials of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), including president Jean-Guy Mayolas, over alleged financial misconduct.

The world football body confirmed the move in a statement on Wednesday. FIFA said a review process uncovered material suggesting possible irregularities in how FECOFOOT used FIFA-allocated funds.

Three Senior Officials Under Scrutiny
The ethics case covers Mayolas, FECOFOOT general secretary Wantete Badji, and finance director Raoul Kanda.

FIFA said its investigatory chamber found a prima facie basis to open formal proceedings after reviewing documents linked to the federation’s finances.

The officials may have breached Articles 29, 25, 21 and 20 of the FIFA Code of Ethics. Those articles cover alleged misappropriation of funds, forgery and falsification, offering or accepting gifts, and conflicts of interest.

Court Case Adds To Pressure
The FIFA probe comes after a separate criminal case in Congo.

Earlier this month, reports from Brazzaville said a criminal court sentenced Mayolas, his wife and his son to life imprisonment over the alleged embezzlement of about $1.1 million in FIFA funds.

Those same reports said the court tried them in absentia because their whereabouts were unknown at the time of judgment.

The court also sentenced Badji and Kanda to five years in prison. Unlike Mayolas, both men reportedly appeared at the hearing.

What Happens Next At FIFA
For now, FIFA has only opened proceedings. It has not yet issued a final disciplinary ruling.

That means the officials have not received any football sanctions from FIFA at this stage. However, if the ethics process confirms the alleged breaches, FIFA could impose bans, suspensions, fines or other penalties under its code.

Fresh Questions Over FECOFOOT Leadership
The case raises fresh concerns over governance inside Congolese football.

FECOFOOT only returned from FIFA suspension in 2025 after a separate dispute over control of the federation’s headquarters and football operations.

Now, this new ethics case puts the federation’s leadership under another wave of pressure. It also increases uncertainty around the future of football administration in Congo.
