FG Launches Digital Teachers’ Registration Portal
The Federal Government has launched a digital portal designed to simplify teachers’ registration and licensing across Nigeria. The initiative, powered by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and supported by the UK-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE), was unveiled in Abuja.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, said the move signals “a new chapter” for teacher professionalism in the country.
“Through this portal, TRCN is not merely digitising records. It is redefining the teaching profession by ensuring a credible database, seamless licensing, and access to professional development,” she said.
Driving Teacher Professionalism
The portal will allow teachers nationwide to register online, update credentials, and access training opportunities in real time. It is expected to improve accountability and transparency, as well as close gaps that have long hindered workforce planning in Nigeria’s education sector.
UK Senior Education Advisor, Ian Attfield, stressed the significance of the project:
“The diversity of Nigeria’s teachers — from community volunteers to professionals — requires systems that are smart, integrated, and motivating. This is a big step forward.”
Building a Digital Education Future
Education experts note that credible teacher data is essential for planning reforms, addressing shortages, and raising quality standards. For decades, Nigeria has struggled with unqualified teachers in both public and private schools.
By digitising registration, the government aims to strengthen oversight while restoring dignity to the teaching profession.
Prof. Ahmad added:
“In a world where knowledge travels at the speed of light, Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind. To build the future we dream of, we must embrace digital tools.”
