FG’s ₦70,000 transport allowance: Six-month support set to begin in November
The Federal Government has agreed to provide federal workers with a ₦70,000 monthly transport allowance for six months beginning in November 2026, according to published accounts of its October 27 agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress.
The intervention followed a conciliation meeting convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja. Channels Television attributed the announced resolutions to a ministry statement issued after the meeting.
Reuters identified federal government workers as the beneficiaries. For eligible employees, the announced terms would provide temporary support towards transport expenses.
State and council participation requires separate confirmation
The resolutions urged state and local governments to participate in the intervention and encouraged unions to pursue implementation at their respective levels.
The federal commitment therefore should not be read as confirmation that every state or council has approved the same allowance. Coverage for their employees requires separate confirmation from the relevant authorities.
The material reviewed also does not establish an entitlement for private-sector employees.
Payment arrangements require confirmation
The Guardian reported that the resolutions did not specify a detailed payment mechanism. An implementation circular was not located during the checks for this report; that does not establish that none has been issued.
The November commencement is an announced commitment, rather than confirmation that payments have begun. The precise payroll arrangements and first payment date require verification.
At ₦70,000 monthly, six complete payments would total ₦420,000 per eligible worker. This is a calculation from the reported terms, not an announcement of a separate lump-sum payment.
Other allowance commitments remain separate
The meeting also produced commitments on other outstanding allowances. Premium Times reported approval of peculiar allowance arrears effective from May 1, to be paid in three monthly instalments beginning in November. It also reported an agreement to settle 19 months of health workers’ allowance arrears over three months beginning in December. These are separate from the transport intervention.
Government and labour representatives agreed to reconvene after one month to assess implementation of the resolutions. That review is expected to examine progress against the commitments reached at the meeting.
