Fenerbahçe have reportedly lodged a complaint against Galatasaray over the protective mask worn by Victor Osimhen before Sunday’s high-pressure Turkish Super Lig meeting.
The Istanbul rivals are preparing for a match that could shape the title race. Galatasaray sit top of the table with 71 points, four points ahead of Fenerbahçe, with four matches left to play.
Fenerbahçe Raise Safety Concern
The complaint centres on the protective gear Osimhen uses during matches. Fenerbahçe reportedly believe the hard material could pose a risk to opposing players.
Turkish outlet HT Spor reported that the club’s medical team is preparing a report on materials that can be used under IFAB rules. For now, there has been no confirmed ruling from the Turkish Football Federation.
Osimhen Returned From Injury
Osimhen returned to action on Wednesday night after more than a month out. He came off the bench for 13 minutes in Galatasaray’s cup defeat to Gençlerbirliği S.K.
He played with a bandaged arm under a long-sleeved shirt, adding more attention to his protective equipment before the derby.
The timing has made the matter more sensitive. Galatasaray need to protect their lead at the top, while Fenerbahçe know Sunday’s match could be their best chance to cut the gap.
Why Osimhen Wears The Mask
Osimhen has worn a protective mask since suffering a serious facial injury while playing for Napoli in 2021.
The Nigerian striker collided with Milan Skriniar during a match against Inter Milan and sustained fractures to his cheekbone and eye socket. Napoli confirmed at the time that titanium plates and 18 screws were used during surgery.
Since then, the mask has become part of Osimhen’s match identity. It has also protected him through several physical contests at club and international level.
Derby Pressure Builds
This latest complaint adds another layer to an already tense derby. Galatasaray enter the fixture with the advantage. Fenerbahçe enter it with pressure. Osimhen, if cleared to play with his usual protection, could still become the central figure in the title battle.
For Galatasaray, the focus will be keeping their lead intact. For Fenerbahçe, the target is simple: win the argument on the pitch after raising one off it.
