One Dead, Four Rescued After Enugu Building Collapse as Cause Remains Unclear
One person has died and four others were rescued after a four-storey building under construction collapsed in Independence Layout, Enugu, early Sunday.
The structure came down at about 6 a.m. on September 13 while workers were reportedly at the site.
Emergency responders recovered one body and rescued four workers, who were taken for treatment.
Authorities said six workers were associated with the site, with one having stepped out before the collapse.
On that account, the five people believed to have been inside were accounted for through the four rescues and one fatality.
The cause of the collapse has not been established.
Rescue agencies respond
The National Emergency Management Agency, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross, police and the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority were involved in the response.
Early reports that more people were feared trapped reflected the first phase of the rescue operation.
Later responder accounts provided a clearer headcount, indicating that one of six workers had left the site before the collapse and five remained inside.
IDNN is therefore not using the earlier “many trapped” framing as a current description of the incident.
Regulators raise compliance concerns
ECTDA Chairman Uche Anya later raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity and whether the construction complied with its 2021 approval.
Those are regulatory observations.
They are not proof that either issue caused the collapse.
Authorities have said an investigation is under way to determine what caused the structure to fail.
That investigation will need to establish whether design, materials, construction practice, approval compliance or another factor contributed.
