Enugu Community Protesters Seek Investigation, Suspension of Traditional Ruler
Residents of Agunese Mmaku Autonomous Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have protested at the Government House, asking Governor Peter Mbah to investigate allegations against their traditional ruler, HRH Cyprian Maduabuchi Nevobasi, and suspend him while the complaints are examined.
The protesters marched from Okpara Square to the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs before proceeding to Government House.
Their complaints are contained in a petition dated September 23, 2026, signed by the community’s legal adviser, Vincent Okafor.
The allegations have not been independently established, and Nevobasi was unavailable for comment in the strongest current report.
Protesters allege interference and intimidation
The protesters accused the traditional ruler of interfering in town-union affairs, frustrating electoral processes and using his influence to intimidate or cause the arrest of community members.
Those are allegations contained in the petition.
They are not findings by the Enugu State Government, the police or a court.
The petitioners are asking the state government to suspend Nevobasi while an independent investigation is conducted.
That demand is theirs and does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing.
Serious allegations remain unverified
The petition also contains allegations concerning deaths, detention, abduction, threats and the use of security agencies against community members.
IDNN has not independently verified those claims.
No official finding establishing Nevobasi’s responsibility for those incidents has been located in the current-source review.
They therefore remain allegations by the petitioners and should not be read as established facts.
Wider town-union dispute
The latest protest is part of a wider dispute over town-union leadership and community administration.
Separate reporting in September described litigation over plans for a town-union election and an interim court order concerning aspects of that process.
That reporting reflects competing claims among community factions and does not independently establish misconduct by Nevobasi.
Monarch’s response remains outstanding
Nevobasi was reported to be unavailable for comment when the strongest current account was filed.
That response gap remains significant because the allegations concern his conduct and authority as traditional ruler.
IDNN is therefore proceeding only under qualified attribution: the protest and petition are established events, but the allegations within the petition remain unproven.
A formal Enugu State Government response to the September 23 petition was also not established in the current-source review.
What the government now needs to clarify
The immediate accountability questions are whether the Enugu State Government has formally reviewed the petition, whether any investigation has been opened and whether a substantive response has been requested from the traditional ruler.
Until stronger official findings, court records or a direct response emerge, the safe position remains:
Agunese Mmaku residents have protested and submitted serious allegations against their traditional ruler, but those allegations remain unverified and his substantive response is outstanding.
