Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71

ABUJA — Former Delta State governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, bringing to a close a public-service career that included eight years as governor and earlier roles in the state’s health and administrative leadership.

Uduaghan died on October 19, 2026.

His family confirmed his death in a formal statement. A family member separately told Channels Television that he died in an Abuja hospital after a period of illness.

The family statement did not disclose a specific medical cause of death.

From medicine to government

Uduaghan was a medical doctor by training before entering senior public service in Delta State.

He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007.

He became governor in 2007 and served two terms, leaving office in 2015.

That career placed him at the centre of Delta State government through a significant period of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

Presidency and political leaders pay tribute

President Bola Tinubu, in an official condolence message, highlighted Uduaghan’s service as health commissioner, secretary to the state government and two-term governor.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other political figures also issued tributes after his death.

Those assessments remain attributable to the people making them and should not be treated as IDNN’s independent judgment of Uduaghan’s record.

Mourning spreads across Delta

Public mourning has also extended into communities in Delta State.

Umeh Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area has declared October 23 a day of mourning in Uduaghan’s honour.

The community said trading, farming and ceremonies would be suspended from dawn to dusk.

That response provides a community-level indication of how his death is being marked beyond official political circles.

A two-term governor in Delta’s political history

Uduaghan governed Delta from 2007 to 2015.

His tenure covered a period in which questions of infrastructure, healthcare, revenue, community development and Niger Delta politics remained central to governance in the oil-producing state.

Political leaders have credited his administration with contributions in areas including healthcare and infrastructure.

Those remain tribute assessments unless supported by independently verified outcome data.

Family asks for prayers

In its statement, the Uduaghan family asked for prayers for the family and others mourning his death.

Funeral arrangements were not included in the formal announcement reviewed for this story.

The cause of death should therefore remain described only as “after a period of illness” where properly attributed.

What happens next

The next developments are expected to centre on funeral arrangements, official mourning and further statements from political and community institutions.

For IDNN, the verified obituary frame remains:

  • death confirmed by family;
  • age 71;
  • governor from 2007 to 2015;
  • Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003;
