CAF Celebrates Gianni Infantino’s 10 Years as FIFA President, Praises Leadership

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has paid tribute to Gianni Infantino as he marks a decade at the helm of FIFA. In a statement released on Thursday, CAF congratulated Infantino for his leadership, acknowledging the productive and mutually beneficial relationship between the African football authority and FIFA over the past 10 years.

CAF’s Praise for Infantino

CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed his admiration for Infantino’s stewardship, highlighting the positive impact of his tenure on football across continents, especially in Africa.

“CAF congratulates Gianni Infantino on the excellent leadership that he has provided as FIFA President over the past 10 years and for his enormous contribution to the development and growth of football throughout the world,” Motsepe said.

He continued, emphasizing the importance of Infantino’s leadership for Africa and beyond. “African football and world football have a loyal and trustworthy friend and partner in Gianni Infantino,” Motsepe added. “CAF wishes him good health and everything of the best,” he concluded.

Infantino’s Path to FIFA Presidency

Infantino first assumed office in February 2016, following the departure of his predecessor Sepp Blatter, during a time when FIFA’s credibility had been severely damaged by corruption scandals. As FIFA’s new president, Infantino, who had previously served as UEFA’s general secretary, promised to restore confidence in the organization and guide it into a new chapter.

In his first election, Infantino won a heated race, securing 115 votes in the second round to defeat Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who received 88 votes. Other candidates, such as Prince Ali bin al Hussein and Jerome Champagne, failed to make a significant impact.

Re-election and Continued Success

Infantino was re-elected in 2019 by acclamation, standing unopposed for a second four-year term at the FIFA Congress in Paris. Over the course of his presidency, FIFA expanded its competitions and increased investments in development programs, with African nations benefiting significantly from enhanced funding and greater participation opportunities.

Infantino’s Legacy and Future

Under Infantino’s leadership, FIFA has made considerable progress, focusing on the development of global football, particularly in underrepresented regions like Africa. His leadership has helped reshape FIFA into a more inclusive and growth-oriented organization.

As Infantino celebrates his 10-year milestone, CAF’s tribute emphasizes his significant contributions to the global game and the positive impact of his leadership on African football.
