Turkish giants Besiktas have sacked head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær after a disappointing start to the new season culminated in elimination from the Europa Conference League.
The decision was confirmed on Thursday after Besiktas lost to Swiss club Lausanne in the play-off round, ending hopes of European competition for 2025/26.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano first broke the news, before the club issued an official statement.
“Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting. Chairman Serdal Adalı thanked Solskjaer for his services,” the statement read.
Solskjær, 52, joined Besiktas in January and guided the club to a fourth-placed finish in the Turkish Süper Lig. However, a poor run of results and the failure to progress in Europe triggered growing pressure from fans and the board.
The Norwegian, best known for his managerial stint at Manchester United, had sought to rebuild his career in Turkey but struggled to impose consistency.
Reports in Istanbul suggest former Borussia Dortmund player and coach Nuri Şahin is among the candidates being considered to replace him.
For now, Besiktas will appoint an interim manager while beginning their search for a permanent successor.
Fans, already disheartened by the club’s early exit from Europe, are now demanding swift action to stabilise the team and return it to title contention.
