Multiple residents were killed after suspected armed herders reportedly attacked Efeyi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State early Tuesday.
PUNCH reported that 15 people were killed when attackers invaded the community around 5 a.m. and opened fire on residents.
Other reports have placed the casualty figure lower, meaning the final death toll still requires official reconciliation.
Even before the final toll is reconciled, the public-safety question is already clear: what protection existed before the attack, what response followed it, and what changes before another exposed community is hit?

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings in a statement reported by PUNCH.
The statement, issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, described the attackers as suspected armed herders and said security forces responded after reports of the incident.
The governor’s reported statement also said police neutralised two suspected participants in the attack.
IDNN is treating that as an official claim pending further police confirmation.
Community fear returns to Otukpo
The attack lands in a local government area that has already recorded deadly violence in recent weeks.
For residents of Efeyi and surrounding communities, the immediate consequence is death, injury care, fear of return attacks and uncertainty over whether security presence will remain after the headlines fade.
