Two Police Officers Killed in Ayilamo Ambush Days After Earlier Deadly Attack
Two Mobile Police officers have been killed in an ambush in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, four days after a separate attack in the community killed four police officers and seven civilians.
The latest attack occurred at about 6 p.m. on September 14 while the officers were accompanying the Divisional Police Officer of Ayilamo back to the community from Makurdi.
Benue State Police Command spokesperson Peter Aondongu confirmed that the DPO’s entourage was ambushed and that two officers were killed. The officers had been newly deployed to Ayilamo.
Six Police Officers Killed Across Two Attacks
The latest ambush followed a separate attack on Ayilamo on September 10.
Police said armed attackers entered the community at about 6:12 p.m. and engaged officers for several hours. The command said its personnel eventually repelled the attackers.
Four police officers and seven civilians were killed in that incident.
Taken together, the two separate attacks left six police officers dead in Ayilamo within four days. That figure does not represent a single incident.
Attacker Identity Remains Unresolved
Residents quoted in reporting described the attackers as suspected armed herders, while police described those involved in the earlier September 10 attack as suspected armed bandits.
The official confirmation reviewed does not establish an ethnic or communal identity for those responsible for the September 14 ambush. IDNN is therefore using armed attackers or gunmen unless investigators establish more.
Earlier Attack Prompted Arrests and Reinforcement
Following the September 10 attack, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings and commended the State Security Service for arresting three suspects allegedly linked to that incident.
Those arrests remain allegations under investigation and do not establish the suspects’ guilt.
The latest ambush raises questions about whether the additional security measures announced after September 10 were sufficient to reduce the immediate threat to residents and security personnel.
Accountability After Repeated Attacks
The two incidents show the continuing security pressure around Ayilamo.
The accountability question is what changed after the first attack: whether intelligence coverage improved, whether reinforcements altered the risk environment and whether authorities have disrupted those responsible.
