Bauchi police arrest two over alleged assault during vehicle check
The Bauchi State Police Command says it arrested two men over an alleged assault on officers during a vehicle-document check along Yelwa Road in Bauchi metropolis.
Police spokesperson Nafiu Habib said the incident occurred on October 3 while officers attached to the ‘E’ Division Patrol Team were carrying out enforcement under Operation Velvet.
According to the command, officers intercepted a vehicle driven by a man identified only as Friday, whose surname had not been established, alongside Yunana Ali.
Police said the officers requested the vehicle documents.
The command alleges that the two men refused to comply, became hostile and assaulted members of the patrol team.
Police further alleged that an inspector’s uniform was torn during the confrontation.
Those allegations have not been established by a court.
Police investigate assault and obstruction allegations
The command said the two men were arrested over allegations including criminal conspiracy, obstruction of public officers on duty, assault and malicious damage.
Police said the suspects were subdued and taken to the ‘E’ Division, where an investigation began.
No independent account of the confrontation was cited in the police statement reviewed for this report.
The command did not report any weapon recovery or disclose injuries linked to the incident.
Police say charges will follow investigation
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu condemned the alleged assault and said attacks on officers carrying out their duties would not be tolerated.
The command also urged members of the public to use lawful complaint channels where they have grievances with police conduct.
Police said the two men would be charged in court after the investigation was completed.
That means no arraignment or formal court outcome had been established in the account reviewed for this report.
For now, what is established is that two men were arrested following a confrontation during a vehicle check.
What remains to be determined is whether the alleged assault, obstruction and damage occurred as police described and what evidence will be presented if the matter proceeds to court.
The arrests do not establish guilt.
