Berom youth group says troops foiled Barkin Ladi ambush, arrested suspect
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association says security personnel foiled an ambush on a school staff member and his son in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State and arrested one suspected attacker.
The group also says an AK-47 rifle was recovered during the incident.
Those claims have been reported by multiple news organisations, but IDNN had not independently confirmed the specific October 15 arrest and weapon recovery with Operation Enduring Peace or the Plateau State Police Command at the latest check.
Group says father and son were targeted
According to a statement signed by BYM National Publicity Secretary Rwang Tengwong, the incident happened on October 15 along the Dorowa Babuje axis in Barkin Ladi.
The association said the two travellers were a staff member of Eliztor Private School and his son.
BYM said personnel of Operation Enduring Peace responded and prevented the incident from escalating.
The group also said one suspected attacker was arrested.
AK-47 recovery remains an attributed claim
BYM says an AK-47 rifle was recovered from the suspect.
IDNN is retaining that as an attributed claim because no official statement from Operation Enduring Peace or Plateau Police confirming that specific recovery had been established at the latest verification point.
Reporting by multiple outlets confirms that BYM made the claim.
It does not independently establish every operational detail in the association’s account.
Earlier OPE operation was separate
Operation Enduring Peace separately confirmed arrests during operations conducted between October 7 and 11 in Plateau State.
Those operations involved an alleged arms fabricator and suspected gunrunners in Mangu and Barkin Ladi local government areas.
Weapons and ammunition were reportedly recovered in those operations.
That was a separate security operation and should not be treated as confirmation of the October 15 Dorowa Babuje incident.
Arrest does not establish guilt
The person said to have been detained in the October 15 incident remains a suspect.
An arrest does not establish guilt, criminal responsibility or membership of an armed group.
No court finding concerning the individual has been established in relation to this incident.
IDNN is also withholding uncorroborated ethnic identification of the alleged attackers because that part of the account has not been independently established.
Why this matters
The reported incident adds to continuing security concerns in and around Barkin Ladi, where residents have faced repeated attacks and security deployments.
For residents, the immediate questions are whether the arrest and reported rifle recovery are officially confirmed, what investigative process follows, and what non-tactical measures are being taken to improve civilian safety.
Those questions can be pursued without publishing details that could expose active security operations.
What happens next
IDNN will continue seeking confirmation from Operation Enduring Peace and Plateau Police on:
- whether one person was arrested in connection with the October 15 incident;
- whether an AK-47 was recovered;
- the suspect’s current custody status; and
- whether any formal investigation or charge has followed.
Until competent official confirmation is obtained, the evidence-bound frame remains:
A Berom youth group says troops foiled an ambush in Barkin Ladi and arrested one suspect, but the specific arrest and weapon-recovery claims remain independently unconfirmed.
