FIFA Clears Arthur Okonkwo to Represent Nigeria Ahead of March International Fixtures

FIFA has cleared Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to represent Nigeria at the senior international level. The 24-year-old is now eligible for selection ahead of Nigeria’s international window in March 2026, when the Super Eagles will travel to Amman for a four-nation invitational tournament.

Okonkwo’s Timely Eligibility Boost

Okonkwo’s approval comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles, particularly with questions lingering over the goalkeeping department. First-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been without a club, and his match sharpness has been under scrutiny in recent weeks. Okonkwo’s clearance offers a timely boost for head coach Eric Chelle, who will now have more options ahead of the tournament.

Transition from England to Nigeria

FIFA formally approved Okonkwo’s switch of allegiance from England to Nigeria in January 2026. This marks the end of a process that had been ongoing behind the scenes. Okonkwo, born to Nigerian parents in London, previously represented England at youth level, earning caps with the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 sides between 2015 and 2019.

His decision to commit to Nigeria came after discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year. Although Okonkwo had hoped to be part of the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, administrative issues prevented his inclusion at the time.

Club Form and Impact

At club level, Okonkwo has developed into a reliable presence in goal for Wrexham. The former Arsenal goalkeeper has stepped up this season after Danny Ward suffered an elbow injury, taking advantage of the opportunity with a series of strong performances.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson praised Okonkwo’s development: “Arthur’s a very influential signing for us when we first brought him in. He’s a player who has adapted well despite a few injuries along the way. He has always responded strongly and is improving all the time,” Parkinson said.

Okonkwo has kept six clean sheets in 20 league appearances this season, further solidifying his reputation as a dependable goalkeeper.

Nigeria’s Upcoming Fixtures

Okonkwo is now eligible to feature for Nigeria as they prepare for their upcoming international fixtures. The Super Eagles will play in a four-nation invitational tournament in Amman, Jordan, beginning on March 27. They will face Iran first, followed by a match against the hosts, Jordan, on March 31. Nigeria will open camp on March 24.

A Fresh Start

With his FIFA clearance, Okonkwo now looks set to make an impact on the international stage. His inclusion provides the Super Eagles with additional depth in the goalkeeping department as they prepare for future challenges, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
