Anambra Seals Collapsed Oko Students’ Lodge, Orders Integrity Tests On Nearby Buildings
Anambra State has sealed the site of a collapsed three-storey students’ lodge in Amaokpala, near Oko, and ordered structural integrity checks on nearby buildings, as officials investigate what caused the deadly incident.
The building, identified in official and media reports as Elite Five Star Lodge, collapsed late on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Orumba North Local Government Area, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Emergency responders, security agencies and state officials moved to the scene after occupants were trapped under the rubble.
At least two people were reported dead, while three others were rescued, according to current media reports. Officials have not yet issued a final consolidated casualty report, and earlier accounts carried unsettled casualty language.
State Seals Site, Orders Wider Safety Checks
The Anambra State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development said the site had been sealed pending a full investigation. The ministry also ordered compulsory structural integrity tests on buildings around the collapsed lodge after receiving intelligence that other structures in the area may be distressed.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Chijioke Ojukwu alleged that preliminary findings pointed to structural failure and that the owners or managers had prior knowledge of defects. That remains an official allegation at this stage.

Culpability Not Yet Established
The state said possible sanctions could include revocation of the property’s Right of Occupancy and prosecution of anyone found culpable. But culpability has not been legally established.
Any finding of negligence must depend on the technical investigation, evidence of prior warning, regulatory records and a fair opportunity for affected parties to respond.
The collapse carries consequences beyond one sealed building. Oko is a student community, and private lodges around tertiary institutions often carry heavy occupancy pressure.
If nearby buildings are found to be distressed, the incident could widen from one collapsed lodge into a broader question about student housing safety, inspection and enforcement.
Accountability Questions Remain
The key accountability questions now are clear: Who approved the structure? Was it built according to plan? Were warning signs reported before the collapse? Did any agency inspect it? Were students or tenants kept in a building already suspected to be unsafe?
For now, the safest established facts are that the building collapsed, casualties were reported, rescue work followed, the state sealed the site, and integrity tests have been ordered on surrounding structures.
The cause, level of prior knowledge and legal responsibility remain under investigation.
For residents and students in the area, the next public-interest test is not only whether the state prosecutes after the tragedy. It is whether the ordered integrity checks identify other dangerous buildings before another collapse forces the same questions over fresh rubble.
