African Scrabble Championship to Offer Record $35,000 Prize in 2026

The 2026 Africa Scrabble Championship will take place in Monrovia, Liberia, offering a $35,000 prize pool. This is the largest prize in the tournament’s history. The event, scheduled for October 21–25, 2026, will offer a $10,000 top prize, a 100% increase from previous editions.

Record Prize Money and Increased Cash Rewards

The Pan African Scrabble Association (PASA) announced the new prize structure. The winner will receive $10,000, up from previous years. The runner-up will earn $5,000, and the third place will get $3,500. Additionally, the fourth place winner will take $3,000, and the fifth place will get $2,250.

For the first time, top 20 finishers will receive cash prizes, a significant change that encourages wider participation.

Prestige with Special Trophies for the Top 3

In addition to the prize money, the top three finishers will receive specially designed trophies. This adds more prestige to the event, making podium finishes even more meaningful.

Stable Registration Fees to Encourage Participation

Despite the prize increase, registration fees for quota players will remain the same as in 2022. PASA aims to make the tournament more accessible to players from various financial backgrounds.

First Time in Liberia

The tournament will be hosted in Benghazi, the second-largest city in Libya. This marks a historical milestone as it will be the first time Liberia has hosted the championship. The event will be held at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex on Tubman Boulevard in Monrovia.

A Major Step for Scrabble in Africa

Wahid Enitan Oshodi, President of PASA, praised the Libyan Table Tennis Federation for their dedication to hosting the event. He said, “Events like this show that Scrabble brings people together across cultures.”

ITTF President Petra Sörling also commended the growing influence of African Scrabble. She highlighted the significance of this tournament in raising Africa’s profile in global table tennis.

Celebrating African Ambition and Confidence

The 2026 Africa Scrabble Championship is more than just a competition. It symbolizes the rise of African Scrabble and the continent’s ambition to compete at the highest level globally. The tournament is set to showcase the talent of African players and highlight their growing role in the international Scrabble community.
