Participants at a cancer-awareness walk in Abuja received health checks as advocates, survivors and government officials called for earlier detection and better support for people living with cancer, according to reports by THISDAY and The Guardian.

The twelfth edition of Walk Away Cancer, organised by Medicaid Cancer Foundation, took place on October 31, 2026, at Monoliza Park in Garki. The event brought together residents, health professionals and policymakers under the theme “One Walk, One Fight,” according to The Guardian.

Health services offered at the event

THISDAY reported that a Health Village provided free clinical breast examinations, blood-pressure and blood-sugar checks, hepatitis testing and eye screening.

Participants also reportedly received coupons for discounted digital mammograms, while girls were offered human papillomavirus vaccinations.

The services were described as part of the event. The reports do not establish that the same free services remain available to the public after the walk.

Speakers call for patient support

The ministers of state for Education and the Federal Capital Territory, Suwaiba Ahmed and Mariya Mahmoud, encouraged people to seek appropriate cancer screening and support patients and survivors, according to THISDAY.

The newspaper also reported appeals for stronger financial support for cancer care.

Coupon terms await confirmation

The Guardian reported that the mammogram coupons could be used at Medicaid facilities. IDNN has not verified the discounted prices, participating locations, eligibility conditions or expiry dates.

The foundation said proceeds from sales of its branded walk kits would support patient-assistance programmes, according to the newspaper. IDNN has not independently verified the amount raised or the terms for accessing that support.
