ALGERIA HANDED BRUTAL GROUP AS THEY FACE ARGENTINA, AUSTRIA & JORDAN

Algeria have been drawn into one of the most challenging groups of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, facing a monumental battle against Argentina, Austria, and Jordan in what analysts already call the “Group of Survival.” The draw, announced in Washington, presents the Desert Foxes with a high-risk, high-reward path.

Argentina — reigning world champions — remain the benchmark, even as Lionel Messi approaches the twilight of his international career. Their tactical cohesion, depth and big-tournament experience make them overwhelming favourites to top the group.

Austria, meanwhile, have evolved into one of Europe’s most disciplined and aggressive pressing teams under Ralf Rangnick. Their athleticism and midfield intensity pose a serious challenge to any opponent.

Jordan, appearing at their first World Cup, may seem like the group’s dark horse, but their recent Asia Cup run demonstrated organisation, resilience and tactical bravery.

For Algeria, the assignment is tough — but not impossible. The North Africans return to the World Cup with renewed identity and hunger after narrowly missing the 2022 edition. With talents like Riyad Mahrez, Ismaël Bennacer, Ramy Bensebaïni and the emerging Amine Gouiri, the Desert Foxes possess creativity, defensive power and counterattacking venom.

Manager Vladimir Petković will need to engineer a tactical masterclass, especially in the opener against Austria — a match widely viewed as Algeria’s best chance to establish group momentum.

Algerian fans, known for their passionate support, have reacted with a mix of respect and belief: “If we escape this group, we can beat anyone,” a popular chant already circulating online.
