Ebola: ECDC reports 62 contacts under follow-up in Nigeria as of October 27

A public update issued on October 29 documents contact monitoring after the confirmed patient’s evacuation to Switzerland.

Nigeria had identified 62 contacts of its confirmed Ebola case and placed them under follow-up as of October 27, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

The agency published the figure in its October 29 update. The update did not provide a contact total for October 30. www.ecdc.europa.eu

Confirmed patient evacuated to Switzerland

The confirmed patient was medically evacuated from Nigeria to Switzerland on October 26. ECDC said the infection, caused by Bundibugyo virus, was confirmed on October 20 after the patient sought medical care in Abuja.

The 62 people identified were contacts under monitoring, rather than confirmed Ebola cases. The update did not establish that those contacts had completed follow-up. www.ecdc.europa.eu

ECDC outlines response support

ECDC also reported deploying three experts to Nigeria from October 26 to advise the European Union delegation in Abuja. It said support had been offered to Nigerian authorities in surveillance, contact tracing, infection prevention and response preparedness.

In its October 29 update, ECDC said epidemiological investigations were continuing.
