Anambra cancer screening campaign targets early detection

NBA Women Forum pushes cancer screening awareness in Anambra

The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum, Anambra State Chapter, has stepped up cancer-awareness activities in Awka and Onitsha, with organisers focusing on early detection and access to screening.

The Onitsha campaign was held on October 16, while the Awka awareness walk followed on October 17.

Organisers said the activities were intended to encourage regular medical checks, healthier lifestyles and prompt attention to possible warning signs.

Awka event includes basic health checks

The Awka walk began at the NBA premises and moved through Quarter Junction to Solution Fun City.

The event also included basic health checks such as blood-pressure and blood-sugar screening.

Those checks were not cancer screening and should not be treated as cancer diagnosis or treatment.

Free cervical screening planned for October 24

Facilitator of the NBA Women Forum, Awka Branch, Obianuju Nwakpadolu, announced that the forum plans to provide free cervical-cancer screening for female lawyers on October 24.

The screening had not yet taken place as of October 19.

The announcement shifts the public-interest focus from awareness alone to practical access: who will qualify, how many women can be accommodated and what happens if an abnormal result is found.

Organisers call for wider screening access

Nwakpadolu also called for wider access to HPV vaccination and more affordable cervical-cancer screening, including subsidised Pap smear services.

Those comments are advocacy positions from the campaign and do not establish that government has expanded those services.

The Onitsha campaign similarly focused on breast, prostate and cervical cancers, with speakers encouraging people to seek professional medical attention when they notice concerning symptoms.

Awareness is not the same as treatment access

The campaign highlights a broader public-health question: awareness can encourage people to seek screening, but it does not by itself establish that diagnosis, referrals or treatment are readily available.

For the planned October 24 screening, the outstanding questions include capacity, eligibility, location and referral arrangements for anyone who requires further investigation.

Further reporting should also establish the Anambra State health authorities’ current position on cervical and breast cancer screening, HPV vaccination access and referral pathways for patients who need additional care.
