Lagos emergencies: LASEMA contains Ilasa fire, clears two tanker breakdowns

LASEMA contains Ilasa fire, clears two tanker breakdowns on Mushin–Oshodi corridor

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency says a fire outbreak in Ilasa and two separate tanker breakdowns along the Mushin–Oshodi corridor were brought under control on Sunday without any death or injury.

The three incidents occurred within hours of one another and triggered separate fire suppression, traffic diversion and heavy-duty vehicle recovery operations.

At No. 5 Balogun Street, Ilasa, LASEMA said its Eagle Response Team from Cappa Base responded to a fire alert received at about 1:05pm.

Responders found part of a bungalow on fire, with three rooms affected.

LASEMA said preliminary findings pointed to a suspected power surge.

The agency’s fire unit and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service extinguished the blaze and carried out dampening-down operations to prevent re-ignition.

No casualty was recorded, and the fire was contained before it spread to adjoining buildings.

Tanker blocks road at Mushin

About 45 minutes after the Ilasa fire alert, the same LASEMA response team was deployed to Mushin Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, where a tanker carrying black oil had broken down and obstructed traffic.

LASEMA said the tanker developed a mechanical fault, causing traffic disruption on the route.

Responders diverted traffic while the agency deployed heavy-duty recovery equipment.

The tanker was removed from the carriageway and parked at a layby, allowing vehicular movement to resume.

Second tanker recovered at Ojuwoye

A second tanker breakdown was recorded at Ojuwoye Bus Stop, inward Oshodi, at about 4:41pm.

LASEMA said the empty tanker also became immobile following a mechanical fault.

Emergency personnel from LASEMA, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Nigeria Police managed traffic while recovery operations were carried out.

The tanker was subsequently removed from the road and parked safely, restoring traffic flow.

No casualties in all three incidents

LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said no death or injury was recorded in any of the three emergencies.

The agency urged residents to take precautions when using electrical appliances and advised motorists to maintain their vehicles regularly to reduce breakdown risks.

LASEMA also reminded residents to report emergencies through the Lagos emergency lines 767 and 112.

For motorists and residents along the corridor, the immediate disruptions have ended: the Ilasa fire was extinguished, both tanker obstructions were cleared and normal traffic flow was restored.

The incidents reinforce LASEMA’s warning on electrical safety and regular vehicle maintenance.
