Four Girls Die, Four Rescued After Boat Capsizes in Jigawa
Four girls have died and four other passengers were rescued after a boat carrying eight people capsized at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, while the passengers were travelling from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market.
The four girls were aged 12 and 13.
Farmers rescue four passengers
According to the NSCDC, farmers working near the pond rescued four passengers after the boat overturned.
Residents of Kwadige and neighbouring Kuna communities also joined the rescue and recovery operation.
The NSCDC said the four girls who died were later buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
Dudduru Pond is about three kilometres from Kwadige Village.
Strong winds considered in preliminary account
The Jigawa NSCDC said preliminary information indicated that strong winds may have contributed to the boat capsizing.
That assessment remains preliminary and is not a final determination of the cause.
The accounts reviewed did not establish whether the condition of the vessel, safety equipment or other factors contributed to the accident.
Water-transport safety comes under focus
Jigawa NSCDC Commandant Muhammad Ingawa urged communities that depend on water transport to avoid travelling during strong winds and adverse weather.
He also called on boat operators and passengers to observe basic safety measures while using waterways.
The deaths raise further public-safety questions for communities where boats remain an essential means of transport, including how weather warnings reach operators and passengers and what safeguards govern travel when conditions become dangerous.
The immediate confirmed toll is four children dead and four passengers rescued.
Authorities will now need to establish the full circumstances of the capsize and determine whether further measures are required to strengthen water-transport safety.
