Police Arrest Suspects After Kebbi Village Head Is Killed in Bagudo
Gunmen have killed and beheaded the village head of Lafagu community in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as police say suspects have been arrested and investigations are continuing.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the killing through its spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman.
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris later identified the victim as Alhaji Saidu Mujeli, the Village Head of Lafagu.
Police have not publicly identified the group responsible for the attack.
Police say suspects have been arrested
The police command said arrests had been made in connection with the killing and that further details would be released as the investigation progresses.
The public statements reviewed do not establish the evidence against those arrested or whether formal charges have been filed.
That distinction matters.
Arrest is not conviction. Suspicion is not guilt.
Those taken into custody should therefore not be described as the perpetrators unless evidence or lawful proceedings establish that status.
Attacker identity remains unresolved
Different accounts have offered competing descriptions of the attackers.
Some reporting has referred to alleged armed ethnic actors, while other reports have described suspected bandits or raised wider concerns about armed groups operating in the region.
Police have not publicly confirmed any of those classifications in relation to the Lafagu killing.
For that reason, the strongest safe description remains gunmen.
No ethnic group, bandit network or Lakurawa element should be identified as responsible without corroborated evidence.
State government reports wider violence and displacement
Governor Idris said recent attacks around Lafagu and Buya communities had resulted in additional deaths and forced some residents to leave homes, farms and businesses.
Those wider casualty and displacement claims remain state-government attributed unless independently established through ground reporting or additional authoritative evidence.
The governor said the state was working with security agencies to strengthen operations and create conditions for displaced residents to return safely.
If independently confirmed, that would make the citizen consequence broader than the killing of one traditional ruler: the issue would also include whether residents can remain in their communities, reach farms and businesses, and move safely without fear of further attack.
A security investigation with unanswered questions
The killing raises several questions that police and security authorities still need to answer.
Investigators must establish:
- who carried out the attack;
- what evidence links any arrested person to the killing;
- whether the Lafagu attack is connected to other recent violence around Buya and neighbouring communities;
- whether residents remain under active threat;
- and what security measures are now in place around affected settlements.
Those questions must be answered with evidence rather than assumptions about the identity or affiliation of the attackers.
What is established — and what is not
The confirmed core is limited but serious:
