Ondo Toxic-Alcohol Investigation Deepens as Death Toll Remains Disputed
Ondo State is investigating a cluster of deaths and serious illnesses in Odigbo Local Government Area linked by health authorities to suspected exposure to a toxic alcoholic substance, but both the precise cause and the final casualty count remain unresolved.
The strongest verified state-health figure available to IDNN is 29 deaths from 60 suspected cases, announced by Health Commissioner Dr Banji Awolowo-Ajaka.
He said three people were admitted in hospitals while 27 others remained under medical observation.
However, later local and secondary reports have cited higher figures, including 30 and 32 deaths, creating a casualty-count conflict that has not yet been reconciled by a newer state Health Ministry statement.
That uncertainty matters.
The state has established that people died and others became seriously ill.
What authorities have not yet publicly established is the exact toxic substance responsible or a final reconciled death toll.
Laboratory cause still pending
Awolowo-Ajaka said the pattern of illness and reported exposure created a strong epidemiological suspicion of a probable toxic alcoholic substance.
But he also said laboratory evidence had not yet established the precise cause of the deaths.
Thirty-six blood and urine samples were collected for laboratory analysis, while samples of suspected alcoholic substances were submitted for toxicological investigation.
Until those results are released, neither methanol nor any other specific toxic agent should be presented as the confirmed cause.
Why the casualty figure remains disputed
The scale of the incident has changed as authorities, hospitals and communities gathered information.
Earlier reports placed the number at 24 before the state Health Commissioner later announced 29 deaths.
Other reports subsequently cited 30 deaths, while Odigbo Local Government Chairman Taiwo Adegoroye was quoted in secondary reporting as giving a figure of 32.
Those figures cannot safely be collapsed into one definitive toll without an updated reconciliation from state health authorities.
For publication purposes, 29 remains the latest directly verified state-health figure available to IDNN, while higher figures remain explicitly attributed and unresolved.
Government widens restrictions
Ondo State has imposed restrictions on the sale and distribution of unverified alcoholic drinks and other unapproved substances as authorities try to prevent further harm.
The government said the wider restrictions followed the Odigbo deaths and were intended to stop potentially unsafe products from circulating while investigations continue.
Health authorities have urged residents to avoid alcoholic products from unlicensed sources and to seek urgent medical attention if symptoms such as blurred vision, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, confusion or loss of consciousness occur after alcohol consumption.
Arrests do not establish liability
Authorities have also reported arrests connected to the investigation.
Health officials said several suspects found selling suspected substances had been taken into custody, while separate reports said a suspected seller was arrested and handed over to police.
Those arrests do not establish that any suspect manufactured a toxic substance, caused the deaths or committed a criminal offence.
Responsibility can only be established through evidence and the legal process.
The public-health question
The immediate task for investigators is to establish whether the cases share a common source, identify the substance involved and determine how widely any contaminated product may have circulated.
The broader accountability question follows from that evidence.
If investigators establish that an unsafe product entered circulation, authorities will need to explain where it came from, how it was distributed, whether regulatory controls failed and what action will prevent another cluster of deaths.
