Flamingos Set for Ghana Test as WAFU B U-17 Girls Campaign Opens

Nigeria’s Flamingos will begin their WAFU B U-17 Girls Championship campaign with immediate pressure: Ghana are waiting.

The two West African rivals have been drawn together in Group B alongside Togo and Niger, setting up an opening test that could shape the early direction of Nigeria’s qualification campaign.

The Black Maidens will open their tournament against Nigeria, with Côte d’Ivoire hosting the competition from mid-September.

The regional tournament also forms part of the qualification pathway to the 2027 U-17 Girls Africa Cup of Nations.

The Group B clash will take place on Wednesday, September 16.

For the Flamingos, that immediately raises the stakes.

There is little room for a slow start in a group containing a familiar regional rival and two other teams chasing the same continental pathway.

Every point matters when qualification pressure begins from the opening fixture.

Ghana will carry their own expectations into the contest, while Nigeria arrive with the weight that comes with being one of the continent’s established youth women’s teams.

The Flamingos have built a strong presence in African youth football, and another qualification campaign brings the same demand: survive the regional pressure first, then earn the right to move onto the continental stage.

The Ghana match gives them no soft landing.

It is a rivalry fixture, an opening test and an early measure of how ready this Nigerian side is for the campaign ahead.

Togo and Niger will follow in the group stage, but the first statement comes against Ghana.

For the Flamingos, the road to another African championship begins with one of West Africa’s toughest tests.
