Ondo deaths: 27 reported as toxicology probe continues

Ondo death toll rises to 27 as tests narrow search for cause

Authorities in Ondo State are intensifying investigations into a cluster of deaths in Odigbo Local Government Area, with the state health commissioner and the council chairman now reporting 27 fatalities as preliminary medical checks reportedly rule out viral and bacterial infections.

The precise cause of the deaths remains unresolved.

Residents in Odigbo, Araromi-Obu and neighbouring communities had reportedly fallen ill after consuming substances suspected to include locally produced alcoholic drinks and herbal preparations.

Police and health authorities have warned that no particular substance has yet been established as the cause.

Police still reconciling casualty figures

Ondo State Commissioner for Health Banji Ajaka and Odigbo Local Government Chairman Taiwo Adegoroye have reported 27 deaths linked to the outbreak under investigation.

Police, however, have said casualty information is still being compiled from hospitals and affected communities.

Higher figures have appeared in some reports, but those numbers have not been adopted as the final verified toll.

The safest current position is therefore that 27 deaths have been reported by state and local officials, while police continue to verify the final casualty count.

Preliminary checks rule out some causes

Ajaka said preliminary investigations had ruled out viral and bacterial infections.

That narrows the medical inquiry but does not establish what killed the victims.

Health authorities are still examining samples, while toxicological tests and other medical investigations are expected to determine whether any consumed substance was responsible.

Police have cautioned against attributing the deaths to herbal drinks, locally produced alcohol or any other product before laboratory analysis is complete.

Authorities tighten controls

Authorities have also moved against the sale and consumption of locally produced alcoholic drinks and other unapproved preparations in affected communities.

Warnings have been issued against uncertified herbal concoctions and other unregulated consumable products while investigations continue.

Those actions are precautionary.

They do not prove that any particular product caused the deaths.

The accountability questions are sharpening

The investigation now has two tracks.

The first is medical: what caused the deaths?

The second is regulatory: if laboratory evidence eventually identifies a harmful substance, where did it come from, who produced or distributed it, and what oversight applied to its sale?

Those questions remain unanswered.

For families and communities in Odigbo, the next decisive evidence will come from laboratory tests, post-mortem findings and final casualty reconciliation.

Until then, three facts must remain separate: 27 deaths have been reported by officials, suspected substances are under investigation, and the cause has not yet been proved.
