Nigeria’s D’Tigress have received the cash reward promised after their historic 2025 Women’s AfroBasket triumph.
The National Sports Commission confirmed that each player received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while team officials were paid the equivalent of $50,000.
According to the commission, the players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, completing the cash component of the presidential reward announced after D’Tigress conquered Africa last year.
The payment closes a reward cycle that began after one of the strongest achievements in Nigerian basketball history.
President Bola Tinubu had approved the $100,000-equivalent payment for each player following Nigeria’s 2025 Women’s AfroBasket victory, alongside the equivalent of $50,000 for coaching and technical staff, housing allocations and national honours.
D’Tigress earned those rewards by extending their dominance of African women’s basketball.
Nigeria defeated Mali 78-64 in the 2025 final in Abidjan to become the first country to win five consecutive Women’s AfroBasket titles.
That run has made D’Tigress one of Nigeria’s most successful national teams and turned the delivery of promised rewards into an issue extending beyond celebration.
The wider reward package also included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours for the players and officials.
For D’Tigress, the significance is clear: another promise attached to their continental success has moved from announcement to delivery.
For Nigerian sport, the pressure now moves to consistency.
The champions have repeatedly delivered on the court. The standard facing administrators is whether athlete recognition and welfare can be delivered with the same reliability.
D’Tigress have done their part.
Keeping promises to champions should not need to become a story every time.
