Military reports killings, ammunition seizures in separate Zamfara, Kaduna operations

The military says troops killed several suspected terrorists and recovered weapons and ammunition in separate operations in Zamfara and Kaduna states on September 2.

The core casualty and recovery details come from Operation Fansan Yamma and have not been independently confirmed by police, local authorities, hospitals or community sources.

In Zamfara, the military said Sector 2 troops acted on intelligence about the movement of suspected terrorists from the Fakai area towards Kwanar Jolof and Tashar Dole in Shinkafi and Zurmi local government areas.

Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, the task force’s media information officer, said troops set up an ambush at Kwanar Jolof and engaged the group.

He said several suspected terrorists were killed while others fled.

The military also reported recovering an RPG launcher, one RPG bomb, an AK-47 rifle, six AK-47 magazines, 106 rounds of ammunition and a motorcycle.

IDNN has not independently verified the number killed or the reported recoveries.

Separate Kaduna operation

In Kaduna, the military said Sector 1 troops stopped a vehicle on the Saulawa–Zaria Road.

Danja said one passenger resisted an inspection of his bag and attempted to flee after being asked to open it.

The military said troops pursued and killed the passenger, whom it described as a suspect.

It also reported finding 793 rounds of ammunition concealed inside gari in the bag.

The vehicle and its driver were taken into military custody for further investigation, according to the task force.

The circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death, his alleged conduct and the reported ammunition recovery have not been independently verified.

Wider security impact unclear

Operation Fansan Yamma described the two operations as part of efforts to disrupt armed groups and the movement of weapons and ammunition across the North-West.

That is the military’s assessment.

Reporting reviewed by IDNN largely traces the operational details to the same military account rather than separate ground confirmation.

There is also no independently verified evidence showing that the operations led to reopened roads, restored farming access, reduced displacement or another measurable improvement in security for affected communities.

The operations therefore add to the record of continuing military activity in the North-West, but their wider effect on residents and local security conditions remains unclear.

Independent accounts from local authorities, police, communities or other ground sources would be needed to strengthen the military’s casualty and recovery claims.
