Police Probe Attack On Osun INEC Officials, Reported Theft Of PVCs

Police probe attack on Osun INEC officials, reported theft of PVCs

Police in Osun State say they are investigating an alleged attack on officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission during PVC distribution in Odo-Otin Local Government Area, where voter cards were reportedly carted away.

The incident was reported at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, Odo-Otin Local Government Area, where INEC officials were said to be distributing Permanent Voter Cards.

Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said INEC officials “were attacked by about 10 armed thugs” while distributing PVCs at the centre.

He said the attackers “reportedly fired sporadically into the air and carted away three packs of Permanent Voter Cards,” according to Punch’s report.

Reports differ on PVC count

Other reports gave different accounts of the number of PVC packs taken.

Channels Television reported that two packs were carted away, while The Nation reported that Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner Mutiu Agboke said INEC was still waiting to ascertain the number of PVCs taken.

Because of that conflict, IDNN is not stating a final number of stolen PVCs as independently settled.

The safest current fact is that PVCs were reportedly taken during an attack on an INEC distribution point, while police investigation and INEC confirmation are still needed.

Police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi said INEC officials “were attacked by about 10 armed thugs” while distributing PVCs at the centre.

Why the incident matters

PVC distribution is a citizen-service function.

A disruption at a collection centre can affect public confidence, voter access and the safety of election officials.

For voters in the affected area, the urgent questions are whether their PVCs were among those taken, whether INEC will issue replacement or collection guidance, and how the commission will protect future distribution points.

What INEC and police need to clarify

The accountability question is now for INEC and security authorities: what exactly was taken, how many voters may be affected, what recovery or replacement process will be offered, and what security changes will be made before the next distribution exercise.

IDNN is holding all claims about the attackers’ identity, party links, motive, final number of PVCs stolen, arrests, injuries and voter-disenfranchisement impact until police, INEC or verifiable records establish them.
