Supreme Court STRIPS Julius Abure of Labour Party Chairmanship — Declares Appeal Court Acted Without Jurisdiction

In a seismic judgment that has shaken Nigeria’s political landscape, the Supreme Court has set aside the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which previously recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous verdict delivered Friday by a five-member panel, the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal overstepped its legal bounds when it ventured into what it described as an internal party leadership matter — a jurisdiction courts are expressly barred from entertaining.
⚖️ “The matter was about party leadership, and as such, courts have no jurisdiction,” the Supreme Court declared.
The justices emphasized that political parties, as independent associations, must resolve internal disputes themselves unless there is a clear violation of the constitution or electoral law.
The ruling comes as a major blow to the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, which has been embattled with internal power struggles since the 2023 general elections.
Appeal Upheld, Cross-Appeal Crushed
The court upheld the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman and another appellant, describing it as meritorious. Simultaneously, the court dismissed the cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction, branding it unmeritorious and lacking in substance.
This ruling effectively invalidates the Appeal Court’s endorsement of Abure and opens the door to fresh internal leadership battles within the Labour Party.
