Portugal are through to the World Cup last 16 after Gonçalo Ramos struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 2-1 win over Croatia in Toronto.
Roberto Martinez’s side had been forced to fight back after Ivan Perisic gave Croatia the lead early in the second half, turning a match Portugal had largely controlled into a nerve-shredding knockout test.
Cristiano Ronaldo brought Portugal level from the penalty spot before Ramos delivered the decisive moment, glancing in Rafael Leao’s cross in stoppage time to send Portugal through and set up a heavyweight last-16 clash with Spain.
Portugal Control, Croatia Strike
Portugal started with urgency and pinned Croatia back for long periods in the opening stages.
Bruno Fernandes was denied early by Dominik Livakovic, while Ronaldo and Renato Veiga also had chances as Portugal pushed for control before the first hydration break. Portugal had two-thirds of the possession and seven attempts by that point, but the breakthrough did not come.
The pattern continued before half-time.
Portugal pressed, moved the ball and forced Croatia to defend deep, but they could not turn pressure into a lead. Rafael Leao’s missed effort in stoppage time summed up a first half where Portugal carried the sharper threat but not the finish.

Croatia punished them after the restart.
Perisic, left free at the far post, drilled the opener past Diogo Costa to put Croatia ahead and change the mood of the tie. Professional match reporting confirms Perisic scored Croatia’s goal before Portugal’s comeback.
Ronaldo Levels From The Spot
Portugal needed a response, and Martinez went bold.
The Portugal coach made four substitutions around the hour mark, a major roll of the dice with his team chasing the game. Soon after, Veiga was brought down in the box by Nikola Vlasic, giving Ronaldo the chance to equalise from the penalty spot.
Ronaldo took it.
The Portugal captain fired straight down the middle to wrong-foot Livakovic and bring Portugal back to 1-1 in the 68th minute.

It was an important moment, but it did not settle the game.
Croatia still threatened. Mateo Kovacic hit the post, and Petar Sucic later had a goal ruled out. Portugal also saw Ronaldo’s own effort disallowed for a marginal offside during a chaotic second-half spell.
The tie had become exactly what knockout football often becomes: tight, emotional and decided by details.
Ramos Delivers The Final Blow
Portugal found the winner when the game appeared to be sliding toward extra time.
Leao crossed from the left and Ramos rose highest to glance the ball home, putting Portugal ahead for the first time and turning the night from anxiety into release. Ramos’ winner came in the 90th minute plus four.
Croatia thought they had one last answer.
A late equaliser was ruled out for offside, allowing Portugal to survive the final storm and protect their path into the last 16.
For Croatia, it was a brutal exit. They had recovered from Portugal’s early pressure, taken the lead and pushed the match into a wild final phase. But Ramos’ header and the late offside call left them with nothing.

Spain Now Wait
Portugal’s reward is one of the biggest fixtures the tournament could offer: Spain in the last 16.
Spain had already advanced after beating Austria 3-0. Their win set up a meeting with the winner of Portugal vs Croatia.
That turns Portugal’s survival into something bigger.
They did not just escape Croatia. They earned a showdown against their Iberian rivals, a match carrying history, pressure and major tournament consequence.
For Martinez, the lessons are clear. Portugal controlled large parts of the first half, had to recover after conceding, and needed their bench to help change the match.
For Ronaldo, the night delivered another knockout goal. But the decisive headline belongs to Ramos.
Portugal survived because Ronaldo levelled it. They advanced because Ramos finished it.
