UEFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Pedro Neto After Ball Boy Incident

UEFA Launches Disciplinary Proceedings Against Pedro Neto

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea winger Pedro Neto following an unsporting incident during the first leg of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Wednesday. The confrontation, which involved a ball boy, has prompted the European governing body to investigate the 23-year-old for his actions.

UEFA confirmed the development on Thursday, stating that the proceedings were initiated due to Neto’s unsporting behavior. A statement from UEFA read, “Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated against Pedro Neto for unsporting behavior,” and added that a decision would be made by UEFA’s disciplinary bodies in due course.

The Incident: Late-Game Tensions

The incident occurred late in the match, which ended in a 5-2 loss for Chelsea. With the Blues trailing 4-2, Neto sprinted toward the touchline to retrieve the ball quickly. In the process, he collided with the ball boy, knocking him over. This sparked a brief confrontation between players from both teams, but order was soon restored.

Neto’s Apology

Following the incident, Neto moved to defuse the situation by apologizing to the ball boy and gifting him his match shirt. In an interview with broadcaster TNT Sports, Neto expressed regret for his actions, stating, “We were losing and in the emotion of the game, I wanted to get the ball fast and I gave him a little push. I’m not like this. It was in the heat of the moment, and I want to apologize. I gave him my shirt. I’m really sorry about it, I feel I have to apologize to him.”

Chelsea’s Response

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior also addressed the situation after the match. “If there was anything from our side that was wrong or out of order, I apologize on behalf of the club,” he said, reinforcing the club’s stance on fair play and sportsmanship.

Impact on Chelsea and Neto’s Season

Neto has been a regular performer for Chelsea this season, with 10 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions. His actions, however, have now put him under the UEFA spotlight. While his apology has been accepted by many, the investigation continues, and UEFA’s ruling could have further implications for the player and the club.
