Speaking in Barranquilla, Colombia, Infantino expressed his confidence in Mexico’s ability to safely host World Cup matches. “Very reassured, everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular,” Infantino told AFP, offering a calm response after the deadly aftermath of the killing of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.
The violence in Mexico, particularly in Guadalajara, stemmed from the military operation to capture Oseguera, which led to cartel members attacking multiple areas, including roadblocks, fires, and clashes with security forces. At least 74 people were killed, and the violent scenes were broadcast globally just months before the World Cup, raising concerns about the safety of fans and participants.

Infantino’s reassurances come after images of violence spread worldwide, drawing attention to potential risks for the World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada in 2026.

“Everything will be under control for the World Cup,” Sheinbaum said, echoing Infantino’s sentiments about the safety of fans.

Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, will host four group-stage matches during the World Cup. It will also play a key role in the qualification process, co-hosting the playoff tournament with Monterrey to determine the final two teams for the 2026 tournament.
