Carlos Alcaraz underlined his supremacy in men’s tennis by defeating rival Jannik Sinner 6–2, 3–6, 6–1, 6–4 to reclaim the US Open crown and wrestle back the world No.1 ranking in New York.

The 22-year-old Spaniard started fast under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof, then absorbed Sinner’s second-set surge before powering clear with a dominant third set. His serve — shaky in their Wimbledon duel — proved decisive, giving him a sixth major title, the second youngest man behind Björn Borg to reach that tally.

The men’s final was delayed by 30 minutes due to heightened security measures after U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival, the first by a sitting president at Flushing Meadows since Bill Clinton in 2000. When play began, Alcaraz quickly found rhythm, dictating exchanges with heavy forehands and mixing in drop shots to blunt Sinner’s baseline game.

Though the Italian, 24, levelled the contest with a gritty second set, Alcaraz reset, sweeping the third 6–1 before closing the fourth with an ace on his third championship point — celebrating with his trademark golf swing gesture.

The result extends Alcaraz’s lead over Sinner to 10–5 in their head-to-head, including 6–4 in Grand Slam trophies and 2–1 in US Open titles. The pair have now contested three consecutive Slam finals in 2025 — a first in tennis history — splitting the honours evenly: Alcaraz at Roland Garros and New York, Sinner at Melbourne and Wimbledon.

Their dominance is unrivalled: the duo have won 10 of the last 13 majors, with Novak Djokovic, beaten by Alcaraz in the semifinals, claiming the remaining three.

For Alcaraz, it is also a return to the summit of the ATP rankings after 65 weeks of Sinner reign. “These two are so far ahead of the rest,” said one former champion courtside, reflecting a rivalry already redefining the sport.
