Group Warns Jonathan: Calls for 2027 Presidency a Political Trap

Caution Against a Comeback

PORT HARCOURT — A Niger Delta socio-political group has warned former President Goodluck Jonathan to be wary of calls urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The South-South Reawakening Group (SSRG), led by Dr. Joseph Ambakaderimo, said those behind the push were the same northern interests that opposed Jonathan during his presidency, branding him “weak” on security.

“Enemies of Nigeria” Behind the Push

Ambakaderimo told reporters in Port Harcourt that the campaign to draft Jonathan into the race was a political trap. “These are the same people who hated Jonathan with passion when he served as president. What has suddenly changed now?” he asked.

He described the strategy as a ploy to scatter southern votes while keeping the North united behind a single candidate. “If this is the plan, we may see a scenario where the northern candidate wins with not more than three million votes, forcing a runoff in 2027,” he warned.

Questioning Motives and Loyalty

The group stressed that Jonathan had not yet spoken publicly about the calls, but questioned the motives of his new “friends.” Ambakaderimo said:

“My understanding is that this scheme is to weaken the incumbent, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and take power back to the North through the back door. So far, we are watching this game with rapt attention.”

History and Legacy at Stake

The SSRG urged Jonathan to weigh his legacy carefully before considering a return. “These are people who once described him with unprintable names. If he allows himself to be used now, it will mark his political demise,” Ambakaderimo said.

The warning comes days after a pro-Jonathan group, Bring Back Our Goodluck, staged a rally in Kano, calling on him to run again. Jonathan has remained silent, telling close allies he is “still consulting.”
