Ilorin, Kwara — The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has disclosed that it recovered over ₦20 billion in stolen public funds in the first half of 2024, sounding the alarm on rising corruption at the state and local government levels.

Chairman Musa Aliyu made the announcement at the North-Central Conference of State Attorneys-General, calling on state justice systems to step up institutional integrity and adopt digital transparency.

“We cannot win the war on corruption from Abuja alone. The rot is local. Prevention is smarter than prosecution,” Aliyu told attendees.

Aliyu revealed the Commission was deploying an online asset declaration platform to curb false filings by public servants and improve tracking.

“If we allow corruption to happen, litigation becomes costly and slow. We must build walls before the flood,” he said.

National Assembly, Judges Back Decentralized Reform

Lawmakers and state chief judges echoed the call for joint efforts to implement Nigeria’s five-pillar anti-corruption framework, especially as judicial reform efforts gain momentum under the current administration.

Speakers included Senate Committee Chair Emmanuel Udende, House Rep Chair Kayode Akiolu, and Kwara State Attorney-General Senior Sulyman — all calling for better budgetary oversight at the subnational level.
