₦900m Ransom, Sleepless Raids, and Conflicting Reports: What Really Happened in the Rescue of Lt. Cynthia Akor?
Lieutenant Cynthia Akor, a Nigerian naval officer attached to Defence Headquarters, has been successfully rescued after being kidnapped alongside her sister and another civilian in Mpape, Abuja, on March 21, 2025.
Armed kidnappers initially demanded a massive ₦900 million ransom—₦500 million for Lt. Akor alone and ₦200 million each for the two civilians. Sources from The Nation newspaper claimed ₦4 million was eventually paid to secure their release, though details of this payment remain disputed.
An intense multi-agency rescue operation, involving the FCT Police CVAnti-Kidnapping Unit, military forces, DSS, and local hunters, unfolded between 2:00 am and 5:30 am on March 23. Security operatives stormed a Fulani settlement in Anguwan Mu’azu and Yelwa Hills, Nasarawa State, arresting four suspects and safely rescuing all abducted victims.
While The Nation reported the kidnappers abandoned the victims in Karu as security forces closed in, The Punch insisted the rescue resulted from a carefully executed raid. Security forces recovered ₦3.2 million cash, believed to be from previous kidnappings.
Lt. Akor and other rescued victims are currently stable, receiving medical treatment at the Nigerian Army Clinic. Investigations continue as security is reinforced around Mpape and neighboring areas to prevent future incidents.
